THIS week we asked Portrush Lifeboat crew member KELLY ALLEN what she'd pack inside her treasure chest.
1. My dog Winston
For companionship, my most loyal best friend.
Faithful, obedient and never answers back… the perfect partner.
He's a real star…soon to be on UTV's series "Portrush Sea Rescue" which we have been filming at the Lifeboat Station
for the past nine months. Winston loves dog biscuits but I'm not so sure whether he'll like coconuts!
2. Camera
I carry one with me all the time….for "happy snaps" and the "big one" which one day may earn me enough to buy my own desert island.
I have just bought a new camera in California and it has refuelled my passion to take more beautiful photographs. I'm addicted to photography…as my long suffering friends will tell you. Say "Cheese!".
3. Photo Albums
My most treasured possessions. I have so many and depend on them to remember what I've done and who my friends are as my memory is so bad.
I've just made a new album about the RNLI over the past year. It'll be brilliant to look back on when I'm on old granny with creaky joints from getting battered about Lifeboats for so many years.
4. Bear Grylls:
The top Survival Expert who really does know how to survive on a desert island. He could keep me alive and be my man Friday.
5. Life raft:
Well I would have to try to escape wouldn't I.
I've spent a lot of time over the years jumping in and out of the inshore lifeboat to rescue people so it would be a comfort to know that I could rescue myself! I'm off to the RNLI Training College in Poole to do a Sea Survival course next week.
The RNLI has a fabulous survival centre which hosts the combined first aid, sea survival and firefighting course. Complete darkness, thunder, lightning, and helicopter recovery can all be simulated to very real effect. The pool also hosts the capsize training element of inshore lifeboat courses… so could this trip to the island wait till I get back please?
6. Hammock
They're great if you can stay in them….I've already fallen out of a few…and it's not funny if you've been fast asleep.
The trick is to keep them just off the ground so that the fall's not too traumatic! I don't think I could rough it on the ground with the creepy crawlies….
7. A deflated football
I'd call it Wilson and paint a face on it like Tom Hanks did in "Castaway". If Bear Grylls and I had a fall out, "Wilson" would be someone to talk to!
8. A very long book
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. It's the longest book I know of and should keep me busy until I'm rescued. It's an escape to a mystical world – a bit like Portrush with orcs, hobbits and trolls. I suffer from insomnia so it should send me to sleep!
9. My Lifeboat pager
It's been attached to me for past 14 years and would feel lost without it on my belt. When it goes off my heart leaps out of my chest and I leave friends and family in my wake as I dash to the Lifeboat station It's a great adrenaline booster – who needs anything else? But hang on a minute….if it goes off while I'm on my desert island it could be day or two before I get back to Portrush.. hmm.
10. Machete
A useful bit of kit on a desert island, especially if, like me, you're vegetarian . Just think of those coconuts, bananas and date palms…. I'd be in veggie heaven!
