MAUNDAY Thursday 2008 is a day that one Portrush man will never forget.
For on that day Sam Kane was selected to attend Armagh Cathedral to receive Maunday money from the Queen during her first Maunday service ever in Northern Ireland.
A former member of Coleraine Borough Council, Sam told the Times: "The dream started when I received a letter from Buckingham Palace informing me that I had been nominated to receive the Maunday money for service to my church and community.

"I checked the envelope - not believing that it could be for me," said Sam who was among the 82 men and 82 women who received the money. The number 82 was chosen as it represents the Queen's age.

"The ceremony in Armagh Cathedral was breath-taking," said Sam who is well deserving of the recognition he received.

He has served Holy Trinity Church in Portrush and the wider community by holding every office open to a layman in the Church of Ireland.
This life-long service to the Main Street church has included eight separate periods of service as Churchwarden.
