FORMER Mayor of Coleraine, Cllr David Barbour officially opened Coleraine Town Hall last week.
The Town Hall was built 150 years ago but due to the 1859 Christian Revival, the official opening was postponed and never happened until last Wednesday.

The occasion was celebrated by council officials, representatives from the Honourable the Irish Society and the Coleraine public.
A parade around the Town Hall was led by two pipers, followed by the mace bearer, councillors and The Honourable the Irish Society. Guests were invited to enjoy the entertainment outside the Town Hall and view the opening ceremony, before entering the building for the official unveiling of the plaque.

As part of the ceremony, schoolchildren from throughout the Borough were invited to come along and log their fondest memories of their schools and living in Coleraine. These were then included in a memory box and will be saved in the Town Hall for future generations.
Former Mayor of Coleraine, Cllr David Barbour said: "I feel extremely privileged to be at this special event. I have enjoyed attending the Town Hall for many formal and informal occasions and I am honoured that the celebrations fell within my year as Mayor.

"The building is at the heart of our town and our community, it is a focal point for visitors to the area and it serves us well when it comes to hosting large events, such as this official opening. It is a shared space for everyone to come and enjoy and I encourage you all to use and enjoy it. There are a number of events still to come in the 150th anniversary celebrations, please do avail of them to see what the Town Hall has to offer you and your community."
Members of the Court for The Honourable The Irish Society, travelled from London to attend the event and were very much involved in the proceedings.

Governor of the Honourable the Irish Society, Sir David Lewis MA DL spoke at the unveiling, saying: "The partnership and support received has been quite honouring. I am delighted to be here and to be part of this occasion. The Honourable the Irish Society has played and instrumental part to development of Coleraine, we have links with the area dating back for 400 years.

"This occasion further strengthens the symbolic and physical links between the City of London and County Londonderry, which we are committed to maintaining and developing."

Members of the public and visitors to the area are encouraged to come and view the plaque and experience the many free family events which will take place over the coming summer months, and leading through the end of year. The events organised all centre around and are designed to celebrate, this landmark building its history, and its future.
