EDUCATION Minister, John O’Dowd, has visited Sandelford Special School in Coleraine.

The Rugby Avenue school caters for pupils with severe learning difficulties and/or complex medical needs and has an enrolment of approximately 144 pupils.

They recently established pre-school provision for up to 16 pupils who have, or are thought to have, severe learning difficulties.

Speaking following his visit on Wednesday morning, the Minister said: “Special schools across the north have an invaluable role to play in offering education and pastoral care to some of our most vulnerable children and young people.

“Sandelford Special School provides its pupils with a very positive educational experience. The caring ethos is evident throughout the school and I commend the teaching staff for making the school an enjoyable experience for all who attend.”

The purpose-built school includes two large playgrounds; a multi-sensory garden and an environmental/wildlife area. The school also has a large hydrotherapy pool which is used to provide pupils with hydrotherapy and swimming sessions.

The Minister congratulated the school staff, saying: “I am impressed by the strong leadership of the school Principal and the hard work and dedication of her teaching staff.

“I congratulate all, including the Board of Governors, for the commitment and passion they have given to this school over the years.”
