IN a week when Northern Ireland has gone into an Olympic frenzy, Belfast has flexed its muscle and been chosen to host the ever-popular World and UK Strongest Man competitions.

Staged at the venue for last year’s MTV awards, the Odyssey, Queens Quay, the Belfast Ultimate Strongman Giant Weekend will run from Thursday August 23 – Monday August 27 placing Northern Ireland firmly on the world stage once more with nine hours of event coverage being televised across the globe.

Events taking place during the five gladiatorial days include the three highly anticipated Ultimate Competitions; UK Strongest Man for the CNP trophy, Masters World Strongest Man and Junior UK Strongest Man. Thirty overall ultimate tests of strength make up the giant weekend with old favourites such as the Ultimate Truck Pull, the Axel Deadlift, the Anchor Pull and the Human Wheelbarrow all returning to entertain the crowds.

The bank holiday weekend will see 30 strongmen from across the world arrive at Queens Quay for the showdown of strength and event organiser and current Masters World Strongest Man, Glenn Ross, explains why such a massive event has found its home in Belfast.

“I had offers from several UK cities all keen to host the competition but as a local man I wanted to bring it to Belfast, not just to support the local economy but to stage a world class family event for the people of Northern Ireland,” Glenn explained.

“For years we were overlooked as a credible host city for nearly all events and now our wee city is attracting attention from all over the world and I’m proud that the Ultimate Strongman Giant Weekend is part of that.” said Glenn.

“We have taken extra steps this year to make the Ultimate weekend the perfect family day out and have included stalls and entertainment to ensure there’s something for everyone in the family, no matter what size their muscles are!” Glenn concluded.

Tickets for the event are available on arrival and cost £5 per day with children under 12 FREE.
