TRAVEL TIMES: It's a charm offensive at One Devonshire Gardens
WHISPER it softly: the season of love is almost upon us.
And while couples may dream of Paris, Prague or Florence there's a hidden gem much closer to home.
Set in a tree-lined Victorian terrace in the fashionable West End, One Devonshire Gardens in Glasgow's West End is an iconic address and a true city institution.
Part of the exquisite Hotel Du Vin group of boutique hotels, One Devonshire deserves its place among Scotland's finest luxury hotels.
Neil Diamond, George Clooney, Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears and Robbie Williams have all stayed there. And - credit crunch withstanding, everyone should, in their lifetime, experience the unique Hotel Du Vin vibe.
Elegant and sophisticated it is, yes, but never snooty. It's a relaxing haven away from all the madness of doom and gloom 2009.
And it's not just the wonderful surroundings that make the hotel great. The X-factor is the staff itself and their own brand of making their guests feel entirely welcome.
Not for them the in-your-face, tick all the boxes hospitality. Theirs is a genuinely warm, Tartan-blanket kind of personal service. Charming and totally engaging.
Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens is a converted terrace of sandstone Georgian houses, with 49 bedrooms and sumptuous suites.
The bed have luxurious Egyptian linen, the monsoon showers are truly unforgettable and there's a lovely, intimate atmosphere where guests can completely unwind.
For example, Hartenberg, an impressive duplex suite, has a fireside roll-top bath in the bedroom, and spiral staircase leading to a twin shower in a clandestine wet room beneath. Heaven!
The dining room is another elegant space, partly oak paneled with original artwork and crisp white napery.
Once the preserve of Gordon Ramsay, the new executive head chef Paul Tamburrini and the emphasis is on classic and modern British and European cuisine with obvious Scottish influences.
Dishes featured on a stellar menu include St Peter's fish, butter roasted John Sory, young carrots pommes sarladaise, spinach, shellfish barnaise and challans duck, chive and ginger oyster, barley, porridge tuile and xrs vinegar.
The 600-bin wine cellar is truly astounding, as is the 300 whiskies that you can enjoy in a nearby snug.
Unsurprisingly the hotel and restaurant has won a clutch of awards and features on the revered Conde Nast Gold list of the world's top hotels.
For a city famous for deep fried Mars Bars and Irn Bru, One Devonshire Gardens has an undeniable style and charm which will live long in the memory.
