EAST Londonderry Alliance councillor Barney Fitzpatrick has expressed deep concerns at the news that electricity bills are to rise next month - on top of the recent shock one-third rise in household gas.
He believes the combined effect could create financial disaster for many families.

Councillor Fitzpatrick said that the energy regulators and the General Consumer Council now needed to get more involved in pricing to protect households.

"I am deeply concerned about this. Any increase in electricity bills would be devastating for local households.

"I have real concerns about how this type of price hike will impact on the fuel poor considering the body blow theyhave just been dealt by Phoenix gas.

"The creation of the single electricity market was supposed to consolidate and stabilise prices but now we hear this news. This issue is something that needs to be scrutinised thoroughly by the energy regulator.

“Those on low incomes cannot stand any more monetary pressure.”
