A Portstewart woman has a date with Orang-utans in Borneo in a fortnight's time - to help the fight against cancer in Northern Ireland.
Of course it not just as simple as that.

First of all she has to complete an eight day hike through the jungles of Borneo, climbing from sea level to the highest point in South East Asia – 4,101m high Mount Kinabalu - as she goes.

Grace McDowell left her seaside home on Saturday morning to travel to the Far East, along with 16 other adventurous souls. They have all signed up for the trip, organised by Action Cancer, and each of them will raise at least £3,400 for the charity in the process.

Grace is really looking forward to the trip. "This will be a wonderful experience", she said, "and at the end we get to spend time at an Orang-utans sanctuary. I'm really looking forward to that."

The trip will be a great challenge for Grace but it is one she is happy to make to raise awareness and funds for Action Cancer. She said: "I have had my own experience with cancer and I count myself very lucky that it was detected early.

"I have had great treatment from everyone during my treatment and now I want to give something back. I feel that it is especially important to support the Big Bus mobile screening unit run by Action Cancer.

"Action Cancer is totally funded by voluntary contributions and I thought, I need a challenge and the trek would be a great way to do that and to raise money for them.

"The trek will be a physical challenge every day, through the jungle and up mountains. We will be staying in tents and a long house in villages along the way and getting to see what the country is really like.

"The thing I am really worrying about is the size of the spiders. I can take snakes, but spiders...no thanks."

Grace has been getting fit on the beach near her home and the sand hills are part of the training regime. Fund raising has also been going well with a ladies golf day at Portstewart Golf Club and a sponsored run by Norman Blair and some of the rugby club members.

She said: "I want to thank my family and everybody who has helped me in this venture. The support has been overwhelming. I am confident of being well over the target and I am just looking forward to get at it."

As Grace takes off for her fantastic adventure she knows that she will be helping Action Cancer in the fight against cancer. We all wish her the best of luck.
