Coleraine councillor and rural champion Michelle Knight McQuillan and three friends took a leap into the unknown recently, when they took part in a sky dive to raise money for a defibrillator for the rural community.

Michelle, her sister Gillian Knight, Nicole McIlveena and Glen Cooper, bravely jumped out of a plane at Garvagh’s Wild Geece Centre back in November.

Michelle explained: “My sister Gillian was celebrating 25 years in business, she wanted to give something back to the community who have supported her, and for some time I had been thinking about the need for a defribrillator for the rural community.

“Church is central to the rural community, for many it is their only social outing. Churches and church halls host many activities for all sectors of the community, young and old. I’ve always had a fear that if someone took unwell it may take some time for an ambulance to get through the rural roads during a big event, and this piece of equipment could save someones life.”

The friends raised enough money to purchase the equipment, which will be located at a central location at St Guire’s, a case and training for 12 volunteers, which will take place in the coming months.
