Portrush '˜think tank' meeting packed out

The evening brought a wide range of stakeholders together to discuss a multi-million pound regeneration plan which aims to secure the resort’s position as Northern Ireland’s premier tourism destination.

The meeting heard how Portrush could benefit from potential funding of £17million between now and the staging of The Open in 2019.

Items up for discussion at the Forum included NI Electricity’s plans to upgrade infrastructure in the town.

Members of the AECOM design team were also present to outline their vision for a new public realm scheme throughout the town centre.

Alderman Maura Hickey said: “Consultation is a key element of these regeneration plans. We want to create a town centre which is successful and sustainable for those who live and work there. I would like to thank everyone who attended the forum event. The large attendance on the night is indicative of the strength of feeling around this issue. The design team are very keen to capture public thoughts and it was clear from the forum that people want to get involved. I hope we can continue working together, and that we capitalise on the exciting opportunities which lie ahead.”

Over the next three years, the regeneration programme includes a new train station and complete streetscape improvement. It will also look at issues around transportation and car parking and address dereliction through a dedicated Urban Development Grant Scheme.

The Minister for Communities has already indicated his commitment to the programme, and is working with the Executive to secure the necessary finance.
