Speaking to the Times as he was boarding the Merlin No85 Royal Train from Coleraine to Bellarena, Denis Desmond, CBE said: “I saw her Majesty a few weeks ago and she said she was really looking forward to this trip on the steam train.”

“It’s also a great day for Her Majesty and Prince Philip to replicate part of their Coronation Tour of 1953.

“And to conclude their visit on this magnificent steam train, the whole thing is just fantastic.”

Mr Desmond hailed all those involved in the organisation of the visit.

“It’s a team effort, ultimately and it takes a lot of work to make something special like this happen on time and on the day.”
