Cllr Clarke said: “On Thursday the United Kingdom took a vital first step on it’s course to regaining full and unfettered sovereignty.

“Control of our own affairs as determined by the people of this country, and the ability to make our own trade agreements with the whole world, including Europe.

“The people of the UK were asked their view, and freely gave it at the ballot box.

“To those who are continuing to worry about the doom and gloom that formed the central theme of the Remain campaign, I encourage you to look beyond the negativity and take heart in the benefits and opportunities that lie ahead.

“Now is not the time for knee-jerk statements.

“In an extension of project fear, I have read nonsense from commentators and politicians about civil war and the inevitability of a united Ireland.

“Now is the time for cool heads and good sense as we begin the task of redefining our place in the world.
