COURT: Man accused of attacking ambulance staff

A Coleraine man was remanded into custody accused of attacking ambulance staff.

Standing in the dock of Coleraine Magistrates Court in a grey tracksuit flanked by two prison officers, 21-year-old Ciaran McKeown was charged with seven offences and confirmed he understood the nature of them.

McKeown, from the Lodge Road in the town, is accused of causing grievous bodily harm to a female, assaulting two male ambulance crew members, assaulting police, attempting to cause criminal damage to the inside of a cell van, causing criminal damage to a pair of police handcuffs and common assault, all alleged to have occurred on 15 July this year.

No facts giving rise to the charges were opened in court but it is understood they relate to an incident when uniformed officers were called to a property on the Lodge Road last Friday.

Giving evidence to the court a female constable said she believed she could connect McKeown to the offences and as no bail application was lodged in his behalf, District Judge John Meehan remanded McKeown into custody to appear again on 15 August.
