EXCLUSIVE PICTURES: WW2 device found in Portrush

An unexploded WW2 device was discovered at the East Strand in Portrush today (Friday).

Army Technical Officers were called to the popular local beach this afternoon following the discovery.

The device was found at 4pm by workmen who are rebuilding the promenade.

It was dug up by a digger on the White Rocks side of the river and moved across the stream.

According to council workers, who were first on scene, one of the workmen hit the device several times with a hammer.

In a joint operation Police and Coast Guard sealed the area and ATO arrived at 18.30.

A controlled explosion was carried out at 20:00 hours.
