Man on van robbery charge breached bail

A man facing a cash-in-transit robbery charge claimed he breached a bail curfew because he missed a train after being delayed by a '˜Mini-Twelfth' parade.

Jason Ian Kennedy (26), whose address was previously as in The Heights area of Coleraine but is now in Antrim town, is charged with stealing £9,251.73 and having a firearm or imitation firearm on July 18 last year.

The charges relate to a cash-in-transit armed robbery in Coleraine in which money was stolen when a ‘gun’ was allegedly placed against the back of a guard’s leg at B&M in the Riverside Retail Park.

The accused appeared in the dock, from custody, at Coleraine Magistrates Court because he had breached his bail.

A prosecutor told the short hearing she had no objections to Kennedy being admitted to bail again.

Defence solicitor John Murphy said that the defendant’s breach of a bail curfew was accepted.

He said his client had gone to Belfast and had a return train ticket to go back to Antrim but because of a ‘Mini-Twelfth’ parade he missed the train and then made it known to a police officer he was in breach of his curfew.

Kennedy, who was wearing a Manchester United football jersey in the dock, had his case sent to Antrim Crown Court for arraignment on September 19.
