POLICE in Coleraine are encouraging business owners to protect their oil tanks, following recent oil thefts at commercial premises in the area.
Inspector Catherine Magee said: “If criminals are looking for bigger profits they will target commercial properties.
“Recently in Coleraine a number of businesses have been victims of oil thefts resulting in a loss of revenue and a whole lot of inconvenience.
“Check perimeter fences regularly to identify any weaknesses and rectify immediately. CCTV, security lighting and properly fitted locks will help deter thieves.”
Inspector Magee added that it is not just business owners who need to stay vigilant.
“We’re also encouraging homeowners to ensure that their oil tanks are fitted with proper locks, situated in well-lit areas and not easily accessible from the roadside.
“One of the most important things people can do is look out for their neighbours. If you notice anything suspicious in your neighbourhood, or see unknown vehicles outside premises, note down any important details such as a description or vehicle registration and contact police immediately.
“Police will follow up on your call and there is every possibility your prompt information could prevent a crime.”
