Get involved in volunteering

Causeway Volunteer Centre works across Coleraine, Ballymoney and Moyle areas to promote and develop volunteering with organisations, like Bee Heard.

Over the past year we have been working with together; training and guiding them through an in-depth process that promotes best practice in volunteering. We are very pleased to be able to say that anyone who wants to volunteer with them will be very well looked after indeed!

Bee Heard is an organisation that is run by and for those affected by mental health issues. They are an independent charity that offers a free drop-in service, providing confidential mental health support for people in their times of need in a safe and welcoming space. Bee Heard currently have 15 volunteers who collectively volunteer 270 hours of their time each month and over the last year have helped over 150 people through their advocacy service.

Bee Heard are looking for volunteers who have experienced mental health issues to become Mental Health Peer Advocates. With their support you could be trained to actively listen and help people work through any issues they are experiencing. James Butler, the Volunteer Coordinator said, “If you know what it is like to feel depressed, anxious, lonely or isolated, then you are one of the best people to become a volunteer for us. Our volunteers are essential to running the service; we simply could not function without them. We look at volunteering with us as a platform to develop skills, experience and confidence which enables you to raise awareness of mental health and help to break the stigma around it.”

Another role available within Bee Heard is an office support volunteer. This role is for those who have a keen interest in organising, fundraising, publicity, events and welcoming people into the service. One volunteer described what their role meant to them, “Bee Heard changed my life for the better, and I was supported through my volunteer role which helped me develop my confidence. Another said, “Volunteering here gives me a purpose, a reason to get out of bed in the morning”.
