A COLERAINE girl is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Dana, Johnny Logan and Linda Martin by representing Ireland in the Eurovision song contest.
22-year-old Laura-Jayne Hunter is one of six finalists to compete in Ireland's song for the Eurovision Song Contest this Friday on RTE One's Late, Late Show.
Laura-Jayne has been writing and performing music since the age of 15 and studied music at Leeds College of Music.
During her time at university, she was awarded a trophy for Outstanding Performance and graduated with a first class honours degree. She was also winner of the Bright Young Things contest in Leeds - a prestigious competition for singer/songwriters.
A former pupil of DH Christie Memorial Primary School in Coleraine and Dalriada School in Ballymoney, Laura-Jayne was working with producer Michael Wolff when he was approached by songwriter Derry O'Donovan with a song he wanted to put forward for the Irish entry for Eurovision which this year will be staged in Moscow.
Derry was looking for a singer and Michael suggested Laura. After reviewing her work Derry knew he had found the perfect vocalist for his song and that's how it all started.
In the last few weeks Laura-Jayne has been travelling between Leeds, Dublin and Germany recording her song and video which will be aired for the first time this Friday night on the Late Late Show.
Laura-Jayne said: "Music, singing and performing is what I love most and what I want to do with my life. I write a lot of my own material and hope to do well with that in the coming year.
"The song I will be singing for Eurovision begins in Gaelic and then breaks into an upbeat pop dance song, it is called 'Out of Control' and is completely different from what I would normally sing, but it's a challenge and I enjoy doing it.
"I'm so excited that I've managed to get this far and would be greatly honoured to represent Ireland in the contest. My inspiration to start singing and writing happened when I lived at home in Coleraine, I think Ireland is such a musical place and I was constantly surrounded by talented people and friends who played instruments and sang.
"I will be performing live with the other five finalists this coming Friday on RTE One's Late Late Show at 9.30pm, so please tune in and support by calling in to vote."
