The Mayor of Coleraine, councillor George Duddy has praised Holywood golfer Rory McIlroy on his fine Open win.

Speaking at last Tuesday afternoon’s Council meeting Mayor Duddy said that Council hoped to build a relationship with golf governing body, the R&A, as Portrush prepares to host The Open in a few years time.

Describing The Open in Portrush as a ‘massive boost for our economy’, Mayor Duddy went on: “I hope that when Royal Portrush hosts The Open in a few years time that Rory McIlroy, our adopted son Darren Clarke or Graeme McDowell lift the jug again. Seeing the success of local golfers like these three is a massive boost to our young people.”
