It took eight counting stages before all five members of the Glens DEA were finally elected.
While current chair of Moyle District Council Cara McShane topped the poll with 839 votes, she had to wait for transfers to see herself elected to the new Causeway Coast and Glens Council.
No candidates reached the quota of 1,082 in the first instance. First to be elected was UUP’s Joan Baird. She is joined by Independent Padraig McShane, brother of Cara, who attracted just four votes less than his sister with 835.
Also elected to the Glens DEA of the new super council are Margaret Anne McKillop of the SDLP and Kieran Mulholland of Sinn Fein.
Shock departures in the Glens DEA were the SDLP’s Donal Cunningham and Sinn Fein’s Colum Thompson as well as former Mayor of Ballymoney, Evelyne Robinson. There was a turn-out of 54.53% in this ward with 6,550 our of a possi;le 12,011 being cast.
