Police in Coleraine are appealing for information after an attempted ATM theft at business premises at Mussenden Road, Castlerock, in the early hours of Friday.

Detective Chief Inspector Catherine Magee said: “Shortly before 4:35am, it was reported that an attempt was made to remove an ATM machine at a petrol station at the Articlave area.

“Nothing is believed to have been taken during the incident. It was reported that a tractor unit of a lorry made a number of attempts to damage the machine by reversing into the building. Enquiries are continuing.

“Police are investigating the theft of a vehicle from premises at the Newmills Road, Coleraine area in the early hours of this morning. It is believed the vehicle stolen during the incident was used at the attempted ATM machine theft at Articlave.

“The vehicle has been subsequently recovered at premises at the Garvagh Road area this morning (Friday). The vehicle is being recovered and will be taken away for further forensic examinations.

“Detectives in Coleraine can be contacted on the 101 non-emergency number. If you prefer to provide information without giving your details you can contact the independent Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Mayor of Coleraine councillor George Duddy has told The Times that both locals and tourists will be inconvenienced by the absence of the machine.

“This will have a real impact on local residents. The nearest bank is in Coleraine - this ATM was a vital service for those in the Articlave area.

“It will also have an impact on the shop, however I understand that efforts are being made to have a machine fitted inside the store.”
