Arts stalwarts

MEMBERS of Coleraine Borough Arts Committee recently paid tribute to two long-standing members as they stood down from the group.

Peggy Vowles and Pat King have been involved in the local arts and cultural scene for many years, and both have been active members of the arts committee through much of that time.

The committee, which meets throughout the year at Flowerfield, allocates a small budget for artists in the community, and in the past has offered financial assistance to artists working in a variety of forms – everything from music and poetry to dance and photography.

Members gathered together at Flowerfield Arts Centre for a short reception in advance of a classical music concert sponsored by the committee. Current chairman Harry McMahon paid tribute to both ladies for their sterling work in support of the arts scene in the area and thanked them for their contribution.

Mrs. Pat King, who resigned as chairman of the committee in 2012, thanked the members on behalf of she and Peggy, and spoke movingly of the efforts the committee had made over the years to support artists and cultural activity in the borough, and the ongoing challenge the committee faced to keep arts at the top of the agenda.

Members then enjoyed a concert of classical music provided by husband and wife flute and piano duo Jonathan and Iryna Johnston.

Artists who are interested in applying for funding from the Arts Committee should note that the next deadline for applications is coming up on March 1.

Copies of the application form are available from Flowerfield Arts Centre, or they can be downloaded from the Flowerfield Arts Centre website on www.flowerfield.org
