Baroness Blood is special guest at meeting held in Coleraine

THE 2008 meeting of the Lower Bann Area group of Women's Institutes was held in Terrace Row Church Hall in Coleraine.

Mrs Helen Jamieson, Area Chairman, gave a warm welcome to a large attendance of members. The special guest speaker was Baroness May Blood MBE who gave a most witty and entertaining talk. A vote of thanks to the Baroness was made by Mrs Christine Adams, President of Macosquin WI.

After supper the platform party was introduced by the Chairman. This consisted of Mrs Margery Thompson, Executive member for Lower Bann, Mrs Iris Jamieson, Area Secretary, sub committee members, executive Area presidents of Lower Bann and four Institute secretaries.

These ladies all gave reports and updates from WI headquarters.

Competition for the Jubilee Bowl was won by Exorna WI. The competition was for a knitted cot blanket and so many members were involved that the Institute was able to deliver the donations to the Royal Victoria, Antrim Area and Altnagelvin Hospitals where they will be used in the neo-natal units.

The Meta McAuley Painting Competition was won by Mrs Joan Wright of Portstewart WI. Area Bowls was won by Mrs Eve McClements of Macosquin WI. Harbinson Trophy for 3D Coupage Open Class was won by Mrs Elizabeth Connor, Garvagh WI.

First place in the Oils Novice Class (Lorna Walker Salver) was won by Mrs Lily Swinton, Macosquin WI.

Other awards were also presented on the evening.

The evening was brought to a close by the Area Chairman thanking the Executive member for her help during the year and to all involved in meetings.

A general vote of thanks was given by Mrs Anne Ramsey, Aghadowey WI, and the evening ended with the singing of the Countrywomen’s Song.
