Buy Fairtrade produce and celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight

COLERAINE Times readers are being asked to switch to support Fairtrade. Fairtrade Fortnight started on Monday, and will run until March 7.

Fiona Watters, a member of Coleraine Fairtrade Group explained: "For this year's Fairtrade Fortnight, we're asking everyone to join us in 'The Big Swap'.

"For two whole weeks, we're asking you to swap your usual stuff for Fairtrade stuff - your usual bananas for Fairtrade bananas, your usual cotton socks for Fairtrade cotton socks and your usual cuppa for a Fairtrade cuppa.

"This Fairtrade Fortnight, we're asking everyone to make an extra effort to swap their cuppa for a Fairtrade cuppa. Because, however you take your cuppa, it's all the more satisfying knowing that the people who grew and picked it are getting a fairer deal for their hard work. "

The aim is to get one million people to make swaps and register them online at fairtrade.org - every swap will be proof that the people of the UK want producers in the developing world to get a fairer deal.

Launching Fairtrade Fortnight in the borough, Mayor of Coleraine, Councillor Sandy Gilkinson said, "When you buy products carrying the Fairtrade mark you ensure that farmers and growers in 57 poor, developing countries are paid a fair price for their products.

"Buying Fairtrade means you are helping third world workers build classrooms, employ nurses, educate their children and invest in a better life. I would encourage everyone to buy Fairtrade whenever they can."

Council's Cloonavin headquarters uses Fairtrade tea, coffee, sugar and biscuits.

Many local shops, supermarkets and cafs – including Ground Espresso Bar, Roughans, Streat, Starbucks, Bentley's, Cinamon Caf, The Sandwich Co, Caf Rendezvous, stock Fairtrade goods.
