CBE for Paul Leighton

FORMER Deputy Chief Constable, Paul Leighton, was awarded the CBE for services to the community and to policing in the New Year honours list.

Mr Leighton, who lives in Coleraine, retired earlier this year as Deputy Chief Constable. He had been a police officer for 29 years and joined the RUC in 1980.

Later, he spent a number of years as an Assistant Chief Constable with Northumbria Constabulary before returning to Northern Ireland, in 2003, to take up the post of Deputy Chief Constable.

The significant contribution he made to policing here was duly recognised by Her Majesty the Queen with the award of the QPM in 2005.

In addition to his essential role in the Service's senior management team, Mr Leighton was an ambassador for, and led on, the extensive charitable work undertaken by Police Service officers and staff over a number of years.

Policing Board Chairman Barry Gilligan said: “The honours announced for these PSNI staff and officers recognise the commitment and service to the community and I offer warmest congratulations to all.”
