CHAMPIONSHIP 2: Honours even

PORTSTEWART could only manage a draw with Championship Two newcomers, Sport and Leisure Swifts on Saturday.

Rowan Neill opened the scoring for Taylor's side after 11 minutes, when he got on the end of Nicholl's cross.

The visitors came back after this, and they levelled from the spot after a trip inside the area.

"It was a game of two halves," admitted Portstewart boss Gary Taylor.

"We had a poor first half, and to be honest we were lucky to be going in level at the break. But we made up for in the second half, and really deserved to get something.

"We had a penalty claim and their keeper pulled off a great save at the end to keep them in it."

Kearney tested McAllister in the Portstewart goal with two good efforts early in the second half, but at the other end Ramsey had an attempt saved for the Ports.

Brian Tosh was denied a goal a minute later, after some good keeping by Preece in the Sport and Leisure goal.

"We made a few changes at the break, Owen Peden came on, but this turned out to be a bit premature, as he was taken off again shortly after. We took a chance on Owen, he broke his collar bone last month, and took a wee knock on Saturday, so Chris Donnell came off the bench, and did well."

Portstewart face basement club Chimney Corner this Saturday.

"I will be hoping to come away with a win," admitted Gary.

"Chimney Corner have a new manager, and he has brought in a few new players, but results haven't been going their way. We've now gone five or six weeks unbeaten, and I hope we can build on this. We're not far away."

Gary was quick to praise his keeper, Hugh McAllister after Saturday's display, he also singled out Rab Nicholl who also impressed.

PORTSTEWART: McAllister, Todd, Nicholl, White, Gaston, Vauls, Friel, Ramsey, Ferry, Neill, Tosh: Subs - McFadden, Smith, Donnell, Peden McGarvey.

Man of the Match: Andrew White.
