COLERAINE Borough Council in partnership with Action Cancer teamed up to raise awareness and vital funds through an ‘Action Man’ programme which took place throughout September to December.

Twenty male staff and councillors participated in the programme which aimed to encourage healthier lifestyle practices over the 12 week period.

The programme began with health screening and goal setting, and concluded with further health screening to identify what progress had been achieved.

Council’s ‘Action Men’ performed exceptionally well to reach their goals. Seventeen completed the programme and some of the goals accomplished by them included, weight loss, increased muscle mass, reduced alcohol consumption and increased physical activity whilst adopting a healthier diet.

The mayor of Coleraine, councillor Sam Cole was impressed with the success of the programme.

“Thank you to all the staff, friends and family who supported all fundraising efforts, and a huge thanks to staff who took part in the ‘Action Man’, the ‘Grow Mo’ programme and the ‘Dress Down Day’, which contributed greatly towards the funds raised from the organisation, totaling £1813.63,” he said.

“This is a truly impressive sum of money and it is reassuring to know these funds will be used to carry out vital cancer research”.

Kerry Anderson from Action Cancer said: “The programme was a huge success and my thanks goes out to all those who participated.

“There was some remarkable achievements made by the ‘Action Men’ participants which included, nine of the men reducing their weight by a total of 17lbs, six increased their weekly exercise intake, six men reduced their cholesterol levels and six men also reduced their blood pressure, four of which reduced it from a level that is considered ‘too high’ back in to a ‘normal’ level”.
