Empty aerosols can now go into blue bins

DID you know that recycling seven aerosol cans, will save enough energy to power a 60 watt light bulb for 26 hours?

Every time we recycle we make a positive contribution to waste and the environment and Coleraine Borough Council has now announced that blue recycling bins can now accept empty aerosol cans.

Council is calling on the community to boost recycling by putting your empty aerosol tins in the blue bins.

Due to improvements at the Glassdon recycling plant in Toomebridge, where our borough's blue bin contents go for sorting for recycling, residents can recycle even more rubbish easily and conveniently from home.

Fiona Watters, Council's Waste and Recycling Officer, explained: "I am delighted by the addition of empty aerosol cans to the list of items the blue bin can now take. Aerosol cans for products like deodorant, hair spray, polish, whipped cream and air freshener can all go into blue bins for recycling.

"The only restriction is that they need to be empty, there is no need to remove the plastic spray button or plastic lid, these can stay on the can. However, full or part-full aerosols must be put into the regular black wheelie bins."

Fiona continued: "Since late last year, we've been able to put more paper including Yellow Pages, phone books, office paper, advertising leaflets, paper-backed books and greeting cards into blue bins. Now we can add empty aerosols to the list of paper, plastic bottles, cardboard, food tins and drink cans for blue bin recycling.

"I understand that people are concerned about climate change and recycling is an easy way to do your bit for a cleaner, greener environment."

Council anticipates that aerosol recycling will add to the impressive 40% recycling already being achieved in the borough through blue bins, recycling points and composting.
