Hutchinson family appeal for witnesses to Mather's Cross incident

A COLERAINE family has issued a heartfelt plea for new witnesses to come forward to help shed new light on the road traffic accident which led to the death of their father.

79-year-old Samuel Hutchinson died in hospital as a result of his injuries after his vehicle collided with another car at Mathers Cross on Thursday, July 23 this year.

Last Friday his daughter, Tina Neal along with brothers David and Roy, appealed on behalf of the whole family for new witnesses to come forward.

"On Thursday, July 23 at 7pm my father, Samuel Hutchinson, was travelling from Portrush in his little blue Fiat Seicento," she said.

"As he approached Mathers Cross he was in collision with a Ford Galaxy.

"As a result of this accident my father lay on life support machine for ten days, but unfortunately due to his horrific injuries he lost his fight for life on August 2.

"We, the family are totally devastated, we are destroyed by this horrific turn of events. The public support has been great, but we are asking you to think again. If you saw the accident on that fateful night, are you the one that saw it happening?

"We are pleading with you to come forward with any information you may have - no matter how small it may seem to you.

"If it was your dad, son or brother, and you were in our position, wouldn't you want that crucial witness to come forward and say what they saw?

"My very active dad has lost his life, we have lost a much-loved father, only to be left with a hole in our hearts and our lives, one that can never be filled. Please help us."

The Senior Investigating Officer, Insp Stephen McPeak, echoed the family's sentiments.

"We are appealing for anyone who saw this accident happening to come forward. Mr Hutchinson's blue Fiat Seicento was travelling from the Portrush direction and was in collision with a Ford Galaxy travelling from Coleraine.

"We have a number of witnesses who saw the events before and after the incident, but we are looking for anyone who was there when the collision happened and for them to make themselves known to the police at Coleraine.

"We have a rough idea of the circumstances but we are still awaiting some forensic evidence to come forward before the incident is eventually passed to the PPS."

If you have any information regarding this accident you can contact the police at Coleraine.
