Is your dog eating the right stuff?

THEY say that we are a nation of dog lovers. But, just how healthy is your best friend?

Last week a Coleraine Veterinary Clinic started free pet check clinics in a bid to educate dog lovers about the dangers of OVERWEIGHT dogs.

Helen Duff of Harding and McKee told The Coleraine Times: "We're always reading in magazines and hearing on television about obesity in humans, but it's a similar problem in dogs. And, that's one of the main reasons we decided to launch this new clinic.

"The clinic will provide a full dog MOT. So we will check the weight of your dog, it's dental health and give it the once over to check and see how healthy your dog really is, " said the veterinary nurse.

Irene McFaul, another registered veterinary nurse at the clinic, explained "We held the first clinic last Wednesday and it was a huge success.

"We were fully booked. We often find that people don't want to bother the vet with smaller pet problems, and they find it easier to speak to a nurse.

" At the clinics we're also offering advice on worming, fleeing.

"We can also help with behavioural problems, so you can bring along your dog get it a health check done and basically ask us anything."

Irene went on to talk about obesity in animals: "It's quite funny when we ask dog owners what they feed their dogs. Then they start to tell us that they have toast and jam in the morning, and a donut in the afternoon.

"It is very dangerous for dogs to eat food like this, and this is why they become obese."

If you would like to book you dog in for the free clinic, which takes place every Wednesday between 2pm and 3.30pm, contact the Clinic at Ballyrashane Road in Coleraine on 028 7034 3425
