LADIES FOOTBALL: Wade goals not enough to beat Cliftonville Ladies
COLERAINE Ladies crashed out of the Divisional Cup on Thursday night.
The girls met Cliftonville in the Cup tie at Coleraine University, and it was the visitors who took an early lead.
Cliftonville scored from a corner in the 18th minute, but before that Coleraine had chances through Lauren Quinn, Lauren Wade and Emma Murphy.
Coleraine dominated the final minutes of the first half playing some good flowing football, but Cliftonville weren't to be outdone, and they grabbed a second goal on 42 minutes.
A tough talking to at half time saw Coleraine come out fighting in the second half. The pep talk seemed to pay off as Lauren Wade scored a fine individual goal three minutes into the second half.
Coleraine were crusing, and it wasn't long before Wade grabbed her second. A good move from left back Amy McAllister found Lauren Quinn who crossed a superb ball to Lauren Wade to make it 2-2.
Cliftonville came back into the game, and had a number of efforts saved by Karri Nicholl in the Coleraine goal. On the hour, the Belfast side went 3-2 in front. An unmarked Cliftonville player was able to shoot from the edge of the box, Nicholl got her finger tips to the ball, but that wasn't enough to clear away the danger.
Coleraine were determined to get back into the game. Alison Nicholl, Karen MIllar and Lauren Wade had chances for Coleraine but it was the Belfast outfit who won through to the next round of the Divisional Cup.
Coleraine player/manager Alison Nicholl said: "We missed Lyndsay Whiteside in the middle of the park. Sarah Gilchrist came in and played there, having only played once so far this season, so it was good for her to get the experience.
" We found ourselves 2-0 down because players were coming through unmarked. Cliftonville play good fooball and to be honest they stretched us. The second half was much better for us. The defence settled, and we created some good chances.
"Lauren Wade took both of her goals well and Lauren Quinn and Karen Millar both had good chances to equalise.
"Overall I was pleased with perfomance, particularly in the second half. We want to concentrate on the league this season, we have players on holidays now, but I hope we have a big enough squad to be able to cope."
