Man dies following motorcycle accident

A 31-year-old motorcyclist has died following a road traffic collision which occurred at the junction of Sea Road and Mussenden Road in Castlerock at the weekend.

The motorcyclist was named as Alex Tanner.

His motorcycle was involved in a collision with a Ford Galaxy car at approximately 7.25pm on Saturday.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. They can be contacted on 0845 600 8000.

Mr Tanner is survived by his parents John and Roberta, sisters Michelle, Lorraine and Lynn and his daughters Alisha and Tamzin.

The SDLP spokesperson on the Environment, John Dallat, has called for a new focus to be put on the safety of motor cyclists following the death of the Castlerock man at the weekend.

"The tragic death at Castlerock is a sharp reminder that motor cyclists are still over-represented in statistics which make up the total number of people who lose their lives on the roads of Northern Ireland each year," said Mr Dallat.

"While the number of motorcyclists killed on the roads last year fell by 10 over the previous year there is no place for complacency given that more than 100 have lost their lives over the last five years.

"Following these most recent deaths the Department of the Environment must step up its current road safety campaign, particularly during the summer months when the number of bikes on the roads increases dramatically.

"Motorcyclists can stay safe on the roads and avoid accidents but it requires extraordinary care on the part of the riders and it calls for special caution on the part of other road users who should remember that an ongoing motorcyclists appears no larger than the width of a pencil approaching.

"Given that more than 50% of motorcycle casualties are caused by other drivers there is a very big onus on all of us to take that extra bit of care when looking out of bikers.

"Our deepest sympathy goes out to the families of those bereaved," he concluded.
