'The Swerve' reach final
THEY came to prominence by sleeping on the street to get suits from Barnardo's and now "The Swerve" have been live on Radio Ulster.
In the week before Christmas the Coleraine Times carried a story about a group of young men braving the elements to beat the morning rush for suits at Barnardo's in Stone Row, Coleraine. The men believed there would be such a rush for cut price suits that they slept out on the pavement from 4am on Thursday, December 20, until the store opened at ten o’clock.
Many people thought that there were dead bodies outside the store and the police were called along to investigate. But the sleep-out was all just to make sure that “The Swerve” got the suits they wanted.
The team wanted to get cheap suits to wear at the Ultimate Frisbee competition on Saturday, December 22, at the Valley Leisure Centre in Newtownabbey. The Coleraine based lads play as “The Swerve” team and they finished second after a gruelling competition, making all their freezing efforts seem worthwhile.
Their activities have also caught the attention of BBC Radio Ulster’s Alan Simpson and on Thursday two of the team appeared live on Alan’s show. They gave the audience a run down on what Ultimate Frisbee is and how they had become involved.
Team Swerve member Jared Cordner told the Times: “We left Coleraine that Saturday at 7.00am and the staff at the leisure centre were a little bemused by seven guys turning up in suits asking about a frisbee competition.
“The tournament itself consisted of six teams from all over Northern Ireland, with players from novice to international level, and it was surely a great day for Ultimate Frisbee culture in Northern Ireland. With two enjoyable games and comfortable wins in the group stages, the Coleraine boys went on to the final of the competition, but as the great under dogs.
“The final was gripping, with notable performances from Ross McMullan and Willi Martin. After 15 minutes it was as ‘tight as a Glaswegian’ with the scores tied at 5-5.
“In the end the experience of the winners ruled and the Swerve just lost too many points without returning any. As the final whistle blew the scoreboard was 8-5 in favour of the hosts of the tournament, the Belfast Ultimate Giants (BUG).
“We walked away, as a team, with seven silver medals as well as our own Willi Martin winning the competition’s prestigious Most Valuable Player award!
“All in all, it was a great fun day, capped by the fact that five of us had gone through such a lot just to make sure that we were maintaining a high level of fashion throughout the matches. Thanks have to go to Barnardo's in Coleraine.”
