Causeway Hospital has hosted an event for Hospital and Community Teams to mark an improvement in the Emergency Department waiting times.

As of last week, it has been a full year since any patient in the Coleraine hospital waited longer than 12 hours to be admitted or discharged.

In his first week in post Chief Executive of the Northern Trust, Dr Stevens thanked staff for the very real achievement in improving the patient experience.

He said he had every confidence that they would continue to build on the already excellent services provided and was impressed by their determination in delivering best possible care for patients.

A whole system approach has been taken in the last year to ensure patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

Within the hospital, Fred Mullan was appointed as Clinical Director and changes to work patterns were introduced for senior medical, nursing, allied health professions and managerial staff including enhanced seven day working. A new rapid response service was introduced in community services and access routes opened up for GPs such as direct admission to specialty wards and increased access to diagnostic services.

Mr Mullan said: “The Northern Trust is delighted with the improvement in waiting times at Causeway Hospital and is holding this event to thank the staff of Causeway Hospital and the broader locality who worked extremely hard to improve this service for our patients.

“This standard has been in place for over a year now and is evidence of sustained improvement being embedded into every day practice.”
