‘A homespun hero’ was honoured on Friday evening when a book chronicling the life of “Sergeant Robert Quigg VC, a Bushmills Hero” was launched by his great-nephew and author of the book, Leonard Quigg.

More than 150 guests including the Lord Lieutenant for County Antrim Joan Christie OBE, Mayor of Causeway Coast & Glens Cllr Michelle Knight-McQuillan, MLAs and UTV’s Paul Clark attended the event hosted by the Old Bushmills Distillery.

Leonard’s book is a detailed account of the courageous actions of Quigg V.C. and provides an insight into the life of this modest and unassuming soldier who risked his life at the Battle of the Somme to save seven men.

All proceeds from the book will be donated to the Robert Quigg V.C. Sculpture Fund.

The book includes a foreward by Lord Ashcroft KCMG PC, owner of the world’s largest collection of Victoria Cross medals, in which he expressed his admiration for Quigg V.C. and endorsed Leonard’s work: “Robert Quigg was a modest man from humble origins, yet he deserves his place amongst that rare breed of men who are entitled to be described as ‘the bravest of the brave’.

“I commend the author for his diligent research and I am sure that Sergeant Robert Quigg V.C. – A Bushmills Hero is a labour of love that will be enjoyed and cherished by all who read it.”
