Seachtain na Gaeilge week at Loreto

Seachtain na Gaelige (Irish Week) was celebrated at Loreto College as St Patrick's Day approached, with a whole range of activities to celebrate all things Irish '“ language, culture, history and music.

There were words of the day, facts of the day and a variety of games and themed activities across the full range of subjects – not just the members of the Irish Department were speaking ‘an cupla focal’ in class!

There was Irish bingo in Maths class, the story of St Patrick in RE, explorations of Celtic Art and quizzes on the counties, rivers, and mountains of Ireland in Geography… and much, much more.

Many students enjoyed getting involved in a Guess Who? – Cé hé? - Competition, involving guessing the identity of various Irish celebrities. The school canteen, Café Lorette, got into the spirit of things too, with bright decorations involving lots of shamrocks and some tasty treats such as green ice cream, shamrock cookies and Irish stew.

Finally, Thursday afternoon saw the culmination of Seachtain na Gaelige with all students of Irish from Year 9- Year 14 taking part in a concert and céilî in the Assembly Hall, showcasing some of the wonderful talent among Loreto’s Gaeligoiri. In particular, there was a wonderful performance at this event by Loreto’s traditional group, Tigh Tara, which will be taking part in the All Ireland Final of the Gael Linn Siansa competition on 2 nd April in the National Concert Hall, Dublin.

Loreto College’s Head of Irish, Bean Ui Mhaolain, paid tribute to all who had taken part in all aspects of Seachtain na Gaelige with a heartfelt ‘go raibh maith agaibh’ to everyone for a memorable week of celebration.
