Local MLA Claire Sugden has said goodbye to student interns Gina Wilson (Coleraine High School), Luke Philpott (Coleraine Academical Institution) and Alison Robinson (Oxford University) who spent part of their summer in Claire’s East Londonderry constituency office.

Claire explained why she feels work experience is so important: “Qualifications, of course, are important, but employers want evidence that a person is capable of doing the job, and that can only realistically be demonstrated through work experience. Unfortunately for young people they are unlikely to have any work experience, so they find it more difficult when applying for jobs.

“Students who work with me are not necessarily interested in politics. Gina is interested in languages, Luke enjoys History and Alison is studying law at university. Many key skills are transferable such as good communication and working within a team. Not long ago I was in a similar position and was very fortunate that David McClarty offered me work experience. I was very grateful for that opportunity and I am keen to offer the same for others.”
