THE WALLS at Flowerfield Arts Centre will be filled with colour through the summer as the gallery welcomes the annual Summer Exhibition from Coleraine Art Society, opening on July 9 and running until July 28.
Acclaimed wildlife artist Julian Friers RUA will do the honours and officially open the exhibition during a special preview evening on Tuesday 10 July at 7pm. Based on the Causeway Coast, Julian is one of the foremost wildlife artists working in Britain today.
An invitation is extended to the public to come along, view the paintings and share a glass of wine on the evening of the 10th. The exhibition features paintings by the members of the Art Society working in various media: oil, watercolour, acrylics and so on. Many of the paintings will also be for sale, and it’s always a good opportunity to pick up a well-priced piece of original artwork.
Coleraine Art Society was founded over 50 years ago, and its members are keen amateur artists or people who are interested in visual art. The group meets at Flowerfield Arts Centre once a month, usually the second Wednesday, from September to April. On these evenings members get to hear talks or watch painting demonstrations given by known or professional artists.
Occasionally painting ‘critiques’ are held, to let members benefit from advice given by working artists. The Society holds two exhibitions each year, an annual Winter Exhibition in November, which takes place in Coleraine Town Hall and is open to Coleraine Art Society members, and the Summer Show at Flowerfield Arts Centre. The year usually rounds off with an AGM in April followed by a trip to a place of local interest which is held in June.
All these events are free to members of the Society. Membership is open to everyone and an events programme and membership application form is available by e-mail from firstname.lastname@example.org - or new members can join if they come to the first meeting, on Wednesday 12 September. Membership costs £15 for adults, £5 for students and there’s a £20 family membership. The Society’s current programme is also displayed at Flowerfield Arts Centre.
For those CAS members contributing to this year’s show, a reminder that the hanging and installation day for the exhibition is Saturday 7 July from 10am.
The exhibition is on show to the public in the Main Gallery at Flowerfield from Monday 9 - 28 July (excluding 12 & 13 July when the Centre will close for the Twelfth Holidays). The gallery is open from Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, and on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm. Admission is free. For more information, get in touch with Flowerfield Arts Centre on (028) 7083 1400.
