A talented young artist from Columba’s Primary School, Kilrea, has won a ‘Walk to School Week Design a Poster Competition’ after sketching a creative design encouraging more children to walk to school.

Year six pupil Cara McTaggart impressed the judges with her creative efforts and was rewarded by having her poster produced as part of the Walk to School Week promotional materials which was sent to schools across the whole of Northern Ireland.

Travelwise NI also rewarded Cara and all the pupils at St Columba’s Primary School with a £750 voucher for sports equipment as an acknowledgement of their commitment to sustainable travel behaviour.

Nuala McMullan, schools co-ordinator for Travelwise NI said: “This year we received over 1653 entries from 73 schools for the poster design competition and I would like to congratulate Cara for coming out on top with a creative design that clearly reflected the theme of this year’s Walk to School Week.

“Thanks to Cara’s efforts, I am delighted to present her with a certificate for winning the poster competition and reward St Columba’s Primary School with a £750 voucher to buy sports equipment like footballs, hockey sticks and tennis racquets which they can use to help to keep them active and healthy.”
