Geese causing a flap on the North Coast

Locals have been posting pictures on social media of grey lag geese that have been spotted in the Portrush and Portstewart areas.

The RSPB say that it is not unusual for the birds to spend the Winter here in Ireland.

“Some greylag geese spend all year round in Northern Ireland, while others spend the winter here after travelling from Iceland and will move on in April/May, so it’s hard to say which category these particular birds fall in to,” explained Amy Colvin of the RSPB.

“The species is amber-listed, that means that they are of medium conservation concern, on the island of Ireland. It’s lovely to see so many local people taking an interest in the birds,” she added.
