McDONALD’S restaurant in Coleraine has become the first franchise in Northern Ireland to segregate waste at the source, reducing waste sent to landfill by a phenomenal 86 per cent.
The busy restaurant chain has been working with Ringsend-based waste management company RiverRidge Recycling to reduce their waste management costs, with the company now sending only 14% of their waste to landfill.
Graham Sparks, Operations Manager McDonald’s Coleraine said: ““Working together with RiverRidge we quickly saw how segregating our waste internally could cut the cost of our waste management.
In our industry we must deliver quality food swiftly, so we needed to implement a system that allowed us to maintain our excellent service levels but also reduce our impact on the environment.”
The company which previously sent 15,400 litres of general mixed waste to landfill, now sends just 2,156 litres to landfill with the rest being recycled or converted into high quality compost.
Hailing the partnership, Pamela Jack, Service Advisor, RiverRidge Recycling told the Times: “We will continue to work with them to cut the costs even further.”
