Children from Ballysally Primary School children have taken part in a Christmas-themed multimedia and play event aimed at building tolerance and respect for others.

The event was organised by leading development group for the 0-6 age range, Early Years – the organisation for young children.

Hosted by Derry City Mayor Martin Reilly, the Ballysally kids were joined by another primary school from Donegal.

Media Initiative for Children (MIFC) – Respecting Difference programme, combines a series of five cartoon media messages helping children build a better understanding of physical, racial and cultural differences – while bullying and the inclusion of Traveller children are also addressed within the videos.

The cartoons are shown on television three times a year – once each school term – in an effort to raise awareness across generations,

Geoff Dunne Principal of Ballysally PS said: “This was an excellent event, the children were so excited about showing off their work.”

Samantha Linton, a teacher at the school, added: “The children really loved the puppets and listening to their messages. They are now taking on board the ideas that we talked about like feelings, being helpful, helping everyone to feel included, it’s really is a great programme.”
