Police appeal after youths set light to Castlerock sand hills

PSNI North Coast say the damage was caused at Castlerock beach on the afternoon of May 16.

In a Facebook post they say: “It is believed that youths set fire to the sand hills and when we attended there were empty bottles of alcohol left in the area.”

The post adds: “Firstly, this is dangerous behaviour. Fire can spread easily in this area and could result in someone being seriously injured or worse, never mind the damage caused to a beautiful part of the country.

“Police would urge parents and guardians to make sure they know where there children are, what they are doing and to talk to them about the danger of getting caught up in this type of activity and the possible outcomes they could face if they are found committing any offence.”

The PSNI spokesman added that “young people should also know the consequences of their actions when they get involved in this type of behaviour”.

“What might seem like fooling about can often result in a criminal record which can affect travel, education and employment opportunities in the future,” he added.

Anyone who has any information about this incident, or who knows of any anti-social behaviour in the Castlerock area, is asked to please report it to Limavady Police Station on the non-emergency number 101. Alternatively information can be provided anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
