Sugden welcomes Coleraine Positive Ageing month

Justice Minister Claire Sugden has welcomed Positive Ageing month in Coleraine.

She said: “I am delighted that October is once again Positive Ageing month across Ballysally, Millburn & Churchlands communities.

“Positive Ageing Month fittingly follows the International Day of Older Persons on 1st October. A range of events have been organised by the Northern HSCT and local community groups to celebrate older people.

“A report by the NI Commissioner has shown that the contribution of older people within communities is huge; through volunteering, caring and befriending, tax payments, and for many older people, an active working life. Locally, without doubt, older people are the most active group within the community.

“I have recently met with a number of older people to discuss issues that they and others are concerned about. These include access to services, feelings of isolation, fuel poverty and the need for greater advocacy. I want to look after those who looked after me and it is vital that the issues that older people are facing every day are heard.

“This month long programme of events is an opportunity to engage across communities, to have fun and to discuss concerns. I encourage all over 50s to make the most of the activities and I welcome any older person with queries or concerns to speak with my office. We are always happy to help.”
