COLERAINE finished the season with an emphatic bonus point victory over Enniskillen on Saturday.
The Fermanagh men made the long journey to Coleraine and enjoyed a hard fought match at Rugby Avenue. In the end Coleraine were just too strong in both attack and defence, and the final score line, 24-7 to the Bannsiders, was a welcome finale to the
season.
Throughout the match Enniskillen showed their strength in the pack and the centre of the park as they launched numerous attacks but good defence from the Coleraine players stemmed all but one score.
Twelve minutes had elapsed when Chris Holmes scored the first points for Coleraine. Slipping through the visiting defence, he broke away from the opposition to score a fine try. David Andrews converted.
With 20 minutes on the clock Coleraine were awarded a penalty and claimed a five metre line out. They secured the ball, moved it quickly across the backs with Mark Hayes finding Gaston to send him over the line for an unconverted try.
As the half drew to a close, Enniskillen punished slack defence by Coleraine to break away from the half way line and score under the posts. The conversion was on target.
The visitors attacked and kept Coleraine under pressure for the remainder of the half but were unable to produce a score. At half time it was 12-7 to Coleraine.
After the break things were even for the first 20 minutes as both sides sought to find a way to the try line. In the end Enniskillen lost a player to a yellow card and the home side took advantage.
From the penalty Richard McNeeley was held up inches from the line after a storming attack. Within two minutes the pressure paid off as Coleraine found Harry Tate on the wing and set him free to sprint across the line and score. Andrews was on target for the conversion.
With 30 minutes gone Coleraine pressure saw Enniskillen lose their No 1 to a red card and again Coleraine pounced. From the penalty they again produced fast ball through the work of Archie Kettyle, finding Tate on the wing for another fine try. The conversion was just wide, leaving the final score 24-7 to Coleraine.
The top four finish in the Kukri Qualifying League means that Coleraine will take part in the All-Ireland Junior Cup next season. That will give an added dimension to the club as they already contemplate next season's campaigns.
The players' dinner is early this year, on Saturday, April 4, because of planned renovation work at the club. Tickets are on sale at the club and a large crowd is expected.
