THE University of Ulster came into the The Gordon West Cup final brimming with confidence after they clinched the Ulster Branch Qualifying League Three at the start of April.
Their 18-13 win over Saturday's finalists Grosvenor completed an unbeaten league campaign for the Uni side, but it was a game too far at Ravenhill as their Belfast counterparts exacted revenge by sealing an 18-8 triumph and quashing the University's
hope of claiming the'double'.

This match was played at blistering pace with these two evenly matched teams putting on a wonderful display of running rugby.
Scott Martin opened the scoring after 10 minutes for Grosvenor with a well struck penalty but this was cancelled out by his UUC counterpart almost immediately and the score remained locked at 3-3.

In the last minute of the half, Grosvenor created some space up the left flank for winger Colin Hamilton to scorch in for a try to leave it 8-3 to Grosvenor at the break.

UUC started the second half strongly and scored a great try of their own to level the scores. The game continued at a frenetic pace but the excellent discipline of each side at the break-downs and well organised defences meant that scoring chances were few and far between.

With 20 minutes to go Scott Martin added a superb penalty from almost the half-way line to nudge Grosvenor in front again. The Coleraine students then threw everything at Grosvenor but the Belmont side's defence held firm and with a few minutes to go the Grosvenor pack rumbled up field for a great forwards try, second-row Neil Thompson getting the touch-down. The final whistle went soon after to spark riotous celebrations in the Grosvenor ranks.
