CASTLEROCK'S Marty Nutt managed a hard-fought top ten finish in the British Supersport Championship this weekend at Brands Hatch – in a race that was started three times.
Because the previous Brands Hatch round, scheduled to be run in April, was snowed off Marty's qualifying time carried over to this weekend and the team only had two free practice sessions to dial his Dawn International 600 Yamaha sponsored by Nutt Travel and T & G into the track.
Disaster struck before the first session and the Yamaha R6 had to undergo an engine rebuild so Marty was forced to sit it out. He made it onto the track for the second session and managed a race-distance simulation to ensure all was well with bike and tyres.
Marty qualified 18th but started from 17th due to the absence of Dennis Hobbs. A storming start saw him claim 13th position at the first corner.
Following an incident at Paddock Hill on the first lap, the safety car came out for a couple of laps as they attended to one of the injured riders.
On the re-start, Marty consistently ran in 13th within a pack of riders and made his move for 12th on lap six before hunting down John McGuinness.
Lap seven saw Marty go up the inside of McGuinness at Clark Curve and begin a charge to the group in front that had been pulling away. The safety car was again bought out on lap ten, so Marty was forced to wait for three laps until he could make his move for ninth.
The final lap saw another crash and Marty settled for eighth places and eight championship points which sees him tenth in the Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship.
He said: "I'm pleased with that, definitely happy with a top ten. It was a fun race and enjoyable. There were some good passes, it was very close and I didn't get a breather on any lap. That's what it's all about."
Commenting on the three starts, he added: "The second one could have been a good thing, but then I was in third gear instead of second so I didn't get the drive. They didn't cost me any places and didn't gain me any either, so I am not too bothered."
Marty now heads to Donington Park at the end of May for a much busier weekend as, in addition to competing within the Supersport championship, there will be two rounds of the Henderson R1 Cup on the Double M Racing/Nutt Travel R1.
Looking towards the next round, he said: "I love Donington. Sometimes it can be frustrating as it can be hard to go fast there, but the track is mega. I've never raced a 600 round there before though, it should be good."
