THE Dunlop name has been synonymous with local road racing for over four decades.
But Robert Dunlop, the most successful rider ever in the history of the North West 200, is hopeful that his sons can carry on the proud record well into future

Speaking at last week's official launch of the NW200 Race Week Festival, Dunlop, who has an incredible 15 wins at the high-speed Triangle circuit, stated that it was an event that always close to his heart.

"The North West 200 is very close to my heart," he said. "I am blessed with the name Dunlop and my brother Joey set a precedent that was very hard to follow.

"It was very difficult to follow in his footsteps and now my sons William and Michael have to try and follow my name and it's very difficult for them, but our family has raced at the North West for almost four decades and hopefully my boys can carry on our continued success."

The week long festival programme, which is organised by Coleraine Borough Council in conjunction with Coleraine and District Motor Club, kicks starts with the NIKA Kart Racing at East Strand Car Park, Portrush.

Other partners have organised events that also feature in the Race Week Festival, which includes a Sponsored Run and Charity Walk of the North West 200 circuit in aid of this year's nominated charity, Northern Ireland Hospice Care and an advices sessions hosted by Bike Safe NI.

Mayor of Coleraine, Cllr Maurice Bradley acknowledged the importance of attracting the entire family to this renowned event.

"The North West 200 helps Coleraine Borough Council profile the North Coast to approximately 150,000 visitors," said Cllr Bradley.

"At Council we have the responsibility to showcase the Borough in the best possible way. The Race Week Festival helps transform a sporting event into an event for all the family.

"I would like to thank Mervyn Whyte MBE, the Coleraine and District Motor Club and all of their associates and

sponsors who help make the North West 200 possible.

"I would also like to commend the staff at Coleraine Borough Council for their efforts in organising and promoting the Race Week Festival and their commitment to making the events available and attractive to all age groups."

Clerk of Course Mervyn Whyte also highlighted Coleraine Borough Council's contribution to the North West 200 and the Race Week Festival.

"Those behind the scenes in Coleraine Borough Council who work in partnership with the NW200 team have produced a fantastic programme for all the family to enjoy," stated Mervyn.

"The festival programme has something for everyone – from young people to families, to local residents and international visitors.
