Paul Cutler, one of Ireland's rising stars, fired himself into contention in the English Open Stroke-play championship at Trevose in Cornwall on Friday.
The 20-year-old from Portstewart returned a sizzling five-under-par 67 in the opening round in ideal conditions to lie just three strokes off the pace set by 22-year-old French international David Antonelli.

Cutler laid the foundations for his good round on the outward half which he covered in a sensational 31 which contained six birdies and just one bogey.

Coming home he dropped a stroke at the 11th but picked one up at the 15th to add a 36 to his front-nine performance.
