PORTRUSH student Andrew McClelland is packing his bags for a trip to Spain to compete in the Kayak Surf European Championships.
The year 10 pupil of Dominican College will travel to Mundaka on Friday with his fellow Northern Ireland Surf Kayaking squad members to compete in the prestigious competition.

It's been a whirlwind for Andrew who was in Bundoran in County Donegal
last weekend to take part in the surf kayaking league.

Then he was asked to compete in the European junior section against teenagers up to the age of 19 before returning to his Portstewart school just in time to sit his Key Stage Three exams in Maths and Science.

"This is going to be a huge learning curve for me. It is my first international competition and I am really looking forward to the experience," said Andrew.

" I have been training at least three times a week for this competition. I am in the middle of working for my key stage three examinations which start the day after I come back and I am making sure to keep on top of the revision.

"Next year I hope to be going to the home international championships and the world championships. Hopefully this competition will help me gain experience."

As well as providing Andrew with invaluable experience, a good placing in the championships could mean a European ranking for the Portrush surf kayaker.

Andrew would also like to thank his sponsors Troggs in Portrush and RST Labels in Coleraine.
